How to Calculate GST
GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a tax added to the price of many goods and services in India. To calculate GST on a price, multiply the original amount by the GST rate and divide by 100.
GST calculation formula
GST amount = Original price × GST rate ÷ 100
Total price including GST = Original price + GST amount
Example: Calculate 18% GST on ₹1,000
For an original price of ₹1,000 and an 18% GST rate:
GST = ₹1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180
Total price including GST = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180
How to Calculate GST Percentage
If you know the original price and the GST amount, the GST percentage can be found by dividing the GST amount by the original price and multiplying by 100.
GST rate = GST amount ÷ Original price × 100
How to Calculate the Basic Price From a GST-Inclusive Amount
When a price already includes GST, the original price is not found by simply subtracting the GST percentage. For a GST-inclusive amount, use:
Original price = Inclusive price × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate)
For example, if the total price is ₹1,180 including 18% GST, the original price is ₹1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000.
What Price Is GST Calculated On?
For a simple calculation, GST is calculated on the taxable value of the goods or service. The taxable value is the amount on which the applicable GST rate is applied.
